zionengine Whoa. Had this come out in 1986, it would have charted high in the U.S. *and* the U.K. This is perfect for a John Hughes film where the two leads have a tearful argument, maybe in a dance club. The darkwave genre grew from music like this.

Scott my fellow commenter here is correct - the disc works at both speeds. i cannot help but wonder (many times over the years) if Mike does it deliberately with his up-tempo tunes (45-->33, 33-->16).

@45: good energy, gloom without the doom; i like them both.

@33: the B-side oozes an early-80s Sisters vibe, while "Simpler Times" suggests what The Cars' "Heartbeat City" might have sounded like if it were produced by Nick Cave.

reliably good stuff, as always. 🍻

Jorge Ramirez I accidentally listened to this at 33rpm on my record player yet i noticed nothing weird and was very enjoyable. now it feels weird going back and listening at a normal speed. 😅

about

US darkwave pioneers Lycia are back with a new 7’’ less than a year after the acclaimed Casa Luna EP. It appears Mike VanPortfleet and his loyals partners (Tara Vanflower, John Fair and David Galas) are living an extremely inspired new youth, as these two tracks convey very lively, spry vibes, yet in the usual dark, melancholic tones which are trademarks of the band.

In a matter of minutes, Lycia are able to take you back four decades, to a time when 4AD was the coolest label on Earth, Clan Of Xymox delivered the best beats around and Cocteau Twins would nurture your dreams. Lycia shapeshifted once again, yet remaining perfectly recognizable.
